Parents and educators share same concerns for children, says NAHT

This morning, Saturday 1st May, parents will be gathering on Twitter at 10am, joined by Michael Rosen, to discuss their hopes and concerns for their children’s education, as part of the parent-led campaign #TurnThePage.

Paul Whiteman, general secretary of school leaders’ union NAHT, comments:

“The issues that are most worrying parents are the same issues that are of biggest concern for school leaders. School funding, mental health and post-Covid recovery are the topics returned to again and again.

“All the talk of ‘catch up’ and ‘left behind children’ has understandably made parents very worried. But the solutions they are calling for are exactly the ones educators know to be the most effective, and we would urge the government to listen. Rather than short-term fixes or poorly thought out, headline-grabbing announcements, both parents and the profession would prioritise long-term investment and a focus on children’s mental health and wellbeing.

“Only by fully funding and resourcing both schools and services can we ensure that children get the help and support they need to learn and succeed.”
