The government must do more to support pupils taking the 11+ this year, says NAHT

Paul Whiteman, general secretary of the school leaders’ union, said: “While we do not support the principle of selection at age 11, it is the reality for many pupils and families in certain parts of the country, and they will be feeling very uncertain about the 11+ exams this year.

“Nationally, around 13% of pupils are eligible for the Pupil Premium, which is a common marker for disadvantage, yet on average, only around 2.5% of pupils who make it to Grammar school are eligible.

“These pupils already face an uphill battle to get into Grammars if that is their aim, so the government should be thinking about much more than just delaying the date of the exams if it is serious about helping them.”
