Race equality in education – why there is still so much work to be done

Interactive online broadcast: Wednesday 9 June 2021, 5pm-6.30pm

Recognising that a year has passed since the murder of George Floyd, this webinar is an opportunity to build on the subsequent increased awareness of race inequality and to remind ourselves that education can play a pivotal role in tackling discrimination in society. It is through education that we can start to build a truly inclusive society. It is through education that we can change minds and challenge prejudice.

Join us, along with guest speakers including TUC head of equalities and strategy Kudsia Batool, NGA chief executive Emma Knights, Show Racism the Red Card’s Sue Schofield, chair of the TUC’s anti-racism task force Dr Patrick Roach and members of our Leaders for Race Equality network, to consider how this awareness can be turned into action for change and how to keep momentum going within the education sector, towards greater equality for all pupils and staff.

There will be opportunities to put questions to the panel. Topics will include unconscious bias and how everyone can promote anti-racism. We will also hear directly from Black, Asian and minority ethnic members of NAHT about how their experiences on their journey to school leadership have been touched by structural and institutional racism.

Our aim is that attending this webinar will leave you with a clearer idea of how you will improve your setting’s approach to anti-racism and addressing race inequality over the coming year, or how to start planning for this. Please feel free to share across your leadership team and with governors – this is also open to non-members.
