What governing boards and school leaders should expect from each other

NAHT, the National Governance Association (NGA), the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL), the Local Government Association (LGA), and Institute of School Business Leadership (ISBL) have collaborated to produce a new edition of this popular guidance document.

The guide sets out best practice in building productive relationships between school leaders and governors and is intended to give a clear understanding of roles and responsibilities including how to strike the right balance between strategic and operational decisions.

This new edition has been updated to reflect the ongoing structural changes to the system, re-emphasising the employer responsibilities of the governance role, as well as highlight the importance and understanding of, the school business leadership role.

The advice is broken down into four key areas:

  1. The respective roles of governance and management,
  2. Developing and supporting the governing board,
  3. Effective ways of working,
  4. Understanding the organisation and engaging with stakeholders.

Members may find it useful to take this to their governing body for formal adoption, alongside the new Governance Handbook and Competency Framework, released by the Department for Education.

The document can be downloaded below.
