Commissioning speech and language therapy services: new guidance for education settings

The Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) and NAHT are pleased to publish this new guidance on commissioning speech and language therapy services.

The guidance is primarily aimed at education leaders wanting to know more about commissioning a speech and language therapy service, and/or training, directly from a speech and language therapy provider. It may be of interest to clinical commissioning groups, councils and local authorities, early years settings, schools and colleges, families and home educators, and members of the RCSLT. You can access the guidance here.

The guidance covers all aspects of commissioning including:

  • The role of a speech and language therapist (SaLT)
  • Understanding the commissioning process
  • Identify speech, language and communication needs in your setting
  • What you need to understand and do when you commission a SaLT provider
  • Regulation of SaLTs
  • Keeping confidential health records
  • Ensuring quality and measuring impact and outcomes
  • Employing a SaLT directly
